What is a dental emergency?

If you experience dental pain the pain can adversely impact your entire life. It may start out as a little discomfort in the mouth, but even that’s enough to cause sleepless nights, headaches, and possibly also problems consuming food and drink.

At Azure Dental Clinic dental emergencies are treated seriously and emergency dental appointments are offered to existing and new patients alike.

If you’re not quite sure whether what you’re experiencing is, in fact, a dental emergency, we’ll make clarifications here. We also discuss how a dental emergency is handled.

Your symptoms may or may not be consistent with a dental emergency. Either way, you should get in touch with us for advice. Your dentist at Azure Dental will be able to provide you with a short notice ad hoc appointment so you no longer have to struggle with the discomfort.

How do you know if you have a dental emergency?

A dental emergency may constitute an expansive range of complaints. Those include:

  • Severe and uncompromising dental pain – If you’re suffering from severe and unrelenting dental pain the pain can be relieved with an emergency dental appointment.
  • Dislodged tooth or teeth – If you’ve experienced a physical impact or some kind of injury to your mouth and this has caused one or more teeth to become dislodged by taking rapid action in terms of booking an emergency dental appointment your tooth or teeth can be saved.
  • Uncontrollable bleeding from the mouth – Bleeding from the mouth that is uncontrollable is certainly regarded as a dental emergency. In this case, you need to consult with your dentist at Azure Dental as soon as you can.
  • Infection – A serious mouth infection (abscess) is regarded as a dental emergency since this situation can prove to be life-threatening. If there is swelling either around or inside your mouth you should consult with us with immediate effect.

In brief, get in touch with your dentist at Azure if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms.

When should it not be regarded as a dental emergency?

A chipped or cracked tooth should not be considered a dental emergency. That is unless you’re experiencing severe pain or there are sharp tooth fragments remaining inside your mouth. If you have toothache but it’s not causing intense pain, it’s best to hold on for a general dental appointment.  A missing filling or crown, while this scenario is not regarded as an emergency, we may opt to treat it as a priority. As such, you’ll be able to book an appointment with us sooner rather than later.

If you decide that your situation is not an emergency, it’s still advisable to get in touch with us for advice and reassurance here at Azure Dental Clinic. We might wish to book you in on an ad hoc appointment. In which case, you’ll get treatment all the sooner.

If I have a dental emergency what should I do before my appointment?

You should realise that prior to your emergency dental appointment there are still things you can do to maintain oral health in the meantime. You may be unaware of what is causing the issue, but even so, it’s particularly important to maintain good oral health.

Cracked or chipped tooth

As discussed, having experienced a cracked or chipped tooth is not considered to be a dental emergency unless the incident involves a painful tooth fracture. If you have experienced a painful fracture, after booking your emergency dental appointment, the best way to provide care in the meantime is to carefully clean your mouth with warm water then apply a cold compress to the exterior area of your mouth in order to relieve pain.

Abscessed tooth

An abscessed tooth can prove to be a life-threatening occurrence. The abscess, which is a collection of pus that may be very painful, it can cause fever, facial swelling, the emergence of tender lymph nodes on the neck, and possibly also a bulge to appear beside the infected tooth. If you do believe you are suffering from an abscess, be sure to get in touch with us as soon as you can. If an abscessed tooth is left untreated, infection can quickly spread to the jaw and also to other areas of the body. Prior to your appointment, do not consume hot food or hot drinks as this may make it worse, and be sure to use a soft toothbrush. Also, avoid using numbing gels.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If you’re unfortunate enough to experience a knocked-out tooth, it’s easy to panic, particularly if the dislodged tooth is from the front of your mouth. A knocked-out tooth is not merely a cosmetic problem. The gap left in the gum when a tooth comes out can allow remaining teeth to move and it may be the cause of weakening in the jaw. An emergency dental appointment can, in fact, save your tooth. During the time that you are waiting for your appointment with us, clean the tooth under the tap with slow-running water to rinse off any debris, and do be careful to avoid touching the root. If you can, the next thing to do is to relocate the tooth back in the socket. If you are unable to do this, place the tooth in a glass of milk until you visit Azure Dental Clinic. Placing the tooth in milk helps to maintain the tooth’s pH balance and the milk helps in preserving the living elements inside the tooth. If you do experience an infection or your tooth has been knocked out, please do your best to clean the surrounding area and keep it free from food debris, as this can be the cause of further infection.

How do I get an emergency dental appointment at Azure Dental Clinic?

If you are sure that you do actually need an emergency appointment get in touch with us here at Azure Dental. When you call us, please clearly explain the problem and let us know that you feel you have a requirement for an emergency appointment.

Our dental surgery always has available appointments for patients that require emergency help and our staff will offer the next vacant emergency appointment.

What will happen during an emergency appointment at Azure Dental Clinic?

Depending on the type of emergency you have, we will locate and then treat the problem. If your pain is severe we will diagnose the issue and provide you with pain relief. There are times when it could be necessary to remove a pain-causing tooth. Don’t worry as your dentist will discuss this with you before it occurs.

If your tooth has been knocked out, we may be able to reinsert it with a splint on either side. The splint does need to be removed and to achieve that you will be asked to return to us within a couple of weeks.

If the tooth cannot be reinserted, normally, it is replaceable with either a dental implant or a bridge. We will advise you about the best way forward when you come for your emergency appointment.

If there’s an abscess we will assess the infected area during your emergency appointment and try to remove the abscess. There are various ways we can remove the abscess, depending on where it is located in your mouth

Those ways include:

  • Root Canal – The abscess can be removed by way of a root canal, after which the tooth is then filled and sealed.
  • Extraction of the Tooth – If a root canal procedure cannot be carried out, tooth extraction may be necessary instead.
  • Incision and Drainage – As the name suggests, in this case, a small incision is made in the abscess and it is drained. Further treatment will be required as this process is frequently used as a temporary solution.

At Azure Dental Clinic we can provide you with a complete care package, irrespective of the underlying problem.

Is it necessary to pay for an emergency appointment?

It is necessary to pay for an emergency appointment in addition to any subsequent treatment should that be required. Subsequent treatment may include a dental implant if your tooth has been knocked out and this is not included with the cost of the emergency dental appointment.

Should I attend Accident and Emergency if I have a dental emergency?

For a dental emergency, it is unnecessary to visit A&E unless you are experiencing severe bleeding or facial swelling or your symptoms are in some way life-threatening.  On the other hand, if you do have a dental emergency, please be sure to book an appointment with us as soon as possible.

Should I call 111 if I have a dental emergency?

If you are not sure if your circumstance is, in fact, a dental emergency or otherwise, you can make a call to the NHS helpline at 111. The operator will advise you as to whether you should attend the A&E or you should get in touch with your dentist at Azure.
