Composite resin bonding due to the advances in dental practice and dental material technology has become an excellent treatment technique for cosmetic dentists to use in helping people improve their smiles and provide a boost in confidence.
It is the art and science of putting tooth colored bonding material over the surfaces of a tooth or damaged teeth in a thin layer to immmediately alter and transform the appearance. Over the last 8-10 years it has developed from being a technique for incisal edge teeth bonding where worn/chipped and damaged edges were reshaped and rebuilt to give them back their natural original profiles, or used to close diastema spaces between teeth to avoid the need for braces.
In recent years composite tooth bonding of natural teeth is now very much a blend of treatment styles ranging from the original edge bonding to restore damage, to deliberately closing and reshaping the spaces between teeth to create a more modern flatter media style tooth profile, up to full composite veneers whereby the whole of the front surface of the tooth is covered.
Composite veneers can also be known as Edelweiss, Componeers, resin veneers or same day veneers. In comparison to other types of veneers such as porcelain veneers require more than a single appointment and temporary veneers while the the final ceramic work is manufactured at a dental lab. Though these days with modern digital CAD-CAM technology you can have same day porcelain veneers with alot of pre-planning.
If a tooth has signifcant damage then alternative dental procedures such as dental crowns and porcelain dental veneers provide a stronger longer lasting outcome usually with a better final cosmetic finish.
Dental bonding treatment of course has its limitations and needs to be correctly performed and maintained for an excellent long lasting result. Luckily at Azure Dental we have Dr Chirag “Chiggs” Patel working with us who is able to produce some of the best composite bonding and veneer work in the UK, he also teaches these latest techniques to other dentists.
One important factor to consider prior to any composite bonding work is the colour of your teeth currently and the desired final colour at the completion of treatment. Resin bonding material does not whiten like a natural tooth, and so if you wish to have an overall whiter smile it is much better to have a teeth whitening procedure firstly to change the overall colour of your teeth and then have the bonding material applied and matched to the new brighter shade.
Porcelain veneers are generally more expensive than their composite counterparts usually around twice as much. The porcelain ceramic work is created by a master ceramist in the laboratory requiring their time and skills with the asscoaited laboratory fees.
Porcelain veneers require more tooth preparation to create the right surfaces for the ceramic and once prepared you will always need to have replacement veneers or crowns in the years to come.
Porcelain veneers are not really repairable should you chip or damage them over time, usually requiring the veener to be replaced. unlike composite which can be repaired, repolished and maintained as needed over time.
Composite material such as Venus pearl or Renamel are special resin pastes that is soft and mouldable while shaping the desired changes onto the teeth. Once correctly positioned it is hardened/ cured with a special blue light which instantly sets it and completes the bond to the tooth. The composite material can then be finally shaped and diamond polished for a beautiful natural tooth effect.
